The Ogun State Government has taken Mistura Adebayo, a young girl reportedly found wandering on two separate occasions, into its custody and commenced medical investigations to determine her health condition and the appropriate care she needs.
The intervention has raised renewed concerns about the safety, welfare and protection of vulnerable children, particularly those whose circumstances may expose them to neglect, abuse or other forms of danger.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the government said it had begun necessary medical assessments to establish Mistura's health status, identify any underlying concerns and determine the most suitable support for her well-being.
Although details surrounding the circumstances that led to the girl's repeated appearances in public remain limited, the ministry said its intervention was aimed at ensuring her safety and securing an appropriate and sustainable care arrangement in her best interests.
HOW THE GOVERNMENT INTERVENED
According to the ministry, the matter first came to the attention of the former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, following a report brought to her by Adetoun Adejobi.
Adeleye reportedly responded by contacting the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mrs Adebimpe Folusho Obienu, who coordinated the deployment of social workers to the police station where the girl had been taken.
However, when the social workers arrived at the station, they were informed that Mistura had already been released to her grandmother.
The situation took another turn the following day when the ministry received a fresh report that the young girl had been seen wandering again.
The second report prompted renewed intervention by the authorities, eventually leading to Mistura being taken into government custody for further assessment and protection.
The ministry's account did not provide additional details about why the girl was reportedly found wandering on the two occasions or the circumstances surrounding her release to her grandmother.
MEDICAL ASSESSMENT TO DETERMINE HER NEEDS
With Mistura now in government custody, medical investigations are underway to determine her health status and establish whether she requires additional medical attention or other forms of specialised support.
The assessments are expected to help the relevant authorities understand her immediate needs and guide decisions concerning her welfare.
Beyond the medical examinations, the ministry said it remained committed to taking the necessary steps to protect the girl and provide a sustainable care arrangement.
For a vulnerable child, such an intervention is significant because effective protection may require more than immediate shelter or temporary custody. It can also involve identifying the circumstances surrounding the child's situation, assessing family and social support systems, and ensuring that any eventual care arrangement prioritises safety, dignity and long-term well-being.
The government, however, has yet to publicly disclose the outcome of the ongoing medical investigations or indicate what long-term arrangements may be made for Mistura.
A RENEWED CALL TO PROTECT VULNERABLE CHILDREN
The development has also provided an opportunity for the Ogun State Government to remind residents of their responsibility to report cases involving the safety and welfare of women and children.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development urged members of the public to promptly report suspected cases of gender-based violence, child abuse, neglect, exploitation and other situations that could endanger vulnerable persons.
It stressed that timely information from members of the public could enable relevant authorities to intervene before a situation deteriorates.
The ministry also encouraged residents who encounter children in distress or circumstances that raise concerns about their safety to seek assistance through the appropriate official channels rather than ignore the situation.

The ministry said the channels were available to help residents report relevant cases and obtain assistance concerning the protection and welfare of women and children.
THE NEED FOR CONTINUED CARE AND PROTECTION
Mistura's case underscores the importance of prompt intervention whenever a child's circumstances raise concerns about safety, supervision or access to appropriate care.
While the government's medical investigations may help clarify her immediate health needs, attention will also be required to ensure that any subsequent decisions are guided by her best interests and supported by appropriate social welfare assessments.
The circumstances surrounding her reported repeated wandering remain unclear, and no conclusion can yet be drawn about the factors that led to the incidents.
For now, the immediate priority, according to the ministry, is to safeguard the girl, assess her condition and determine a suitable care arrangement.
In its statement, the ministry emphasised that prompt reporting could save lives and protect vulnerable persons, urging residents to speak up whenever they encounter situations that threaten the safety and welfare of women and children.
The statement was signed by Mrs Adebimpe Folusho Obienu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Ogun State.
As the medical investigations continue, public attention will remain focused on the outcome of the assessment and the steps the authorities will take to ensure Mistura receives the protection and care she needs.
