As Nigerians across the country commemorated the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ambassador Adesina 'Lanre Ogunsola, FCPA, has called on citizens to embrace peace, love, unity and heightened vigilance in the collective pursuit of national development and security.
In a Democracy Day message issued on June 12, 2026, Ogunsola described the annual commemoration as a significant reminder of Nigeria's democratic journey and the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for the nation's freedom and democratic governance.
Addressing residents of Obafemi Owode Local Government and Nigerians at large, the council chairman noted that June 12 remains one of the most important dates in the country's political history, symbolizing the triumph of the people's will and the enduring struggle for democracy.
According to him, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, GCFR, whose victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election was annulled, remains a symbol of sacrifice and resilience in Nigeria's democratic evolution.
"June 12 signifies the advent of the democracy we cherish today. It is a day that stands as a pivotal moment in our nation's history and should continue to be remembered every year as our nation grows stronger and more prosperous," he stated.
Ogunsola paid tribute to MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy heroes whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms currently enjoyed by Nigerians. He urged citizens not to allow their efforts to be forgotten, emphasizing the need to uphold the values of tolerance, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.
The local government chairman further appealed to residents to honor the memories of past heroes by fostering harmonious relationships within their communities.
He stressed that peace, love and unity remain essential ingredients for sustainable development and national progress, adding that citizens have a responsibility to work together irrespective of ethnic, religious or political differences.
In light of the prevailing security challenges facing parts of the country, Ogunsola also called for increased vigilance among members of the public and stronger collaboration with security agencies.
He urged residents to adopt a proactive approach to community security by promptly reporting suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
"If you see something, quickly say something," he advised, noting that timely information from citizens could significantly assist security agencies in preventing crime and safeguarding lives and property.
The chairman reiterated that security is a collective responsibility and encouraged residents to remain alert while supporting government efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability.
As the nation celebrates another year of uninterrupted democratic governance, Ogunsola expressed optimism about Nigeria's future, urging citizens to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, good governance and national unity.
He concluded by wishing all residents of Obafemi Owode Local Government and Nigerians across the country a memorable Democracy Day celebration, while calling for renewed dedication to building a more peaceful, secure and prosperous nation.
