SAGAMU — The Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Olasile Odulate, has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a historic symbol of the people's voice, resilience, and unwavering commitment to democratic governance.
In a goodwill message commemorating the nation's Democracy Day celebration, Odulate paid glowing tribute to the heroes and heroines whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.
According to the council chairman, June 12 remains one of the most significant dates in Nigeria's political history, serving as a reminder of the courage demonstrated by citizens who stood firmly for justice, freedom, and democratic principles.
"June 12 remains a powerful symbol of the people's voice, courage, and belief in democratic governance," Odulate stated.
Reflecting on the significance of the day, the chairman noted that the struggle for democracy was not without sacrifice, emphasizing that many brave Nigerians dedicated their lives and resources to ensure that the nation would enjoy democratic rule.
He stressed that the achievements of democracy must never be taken for granted, adding that the nation's progress depends on the collective commitment of citizens to uphold democratic values and contribute positively to national development.
"As we honour this historic day, we remember the brave men and women whose sacrifices secured the democratic freedoms we enjoy today. Their courage reminds us that nation-building is a shared responsibility requiring commitment, unity, and patriotism from all," he said.
Odulate further highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of Nigeria's democratic heroes by actively participating in democratic processes and supporting initiatives that foster peace, accountability, and good governance.
Quoting a line from the national anthem, he reiterated that the sacrifices of past heroes should continue to inspire present and future generations.
"The labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain. Their legacy lives on in every democratic process, every vote cast, and every effort made towards a better Nigeria," he remarked.
The council boss also used the occasion to call on residents of Sagamu Local Government and Nigerians across the country to remain united despite political, ethnic, and religious differences, noting that national progress can only be achieved through cooperation and a shared vision for development.
He urged citizens to continue supporting government initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing social welfare, promoting economic growth, and strengthening democratic institutions.
"I urge all residents of Sagamu and Nigerians at large to continue supporting efforts aimed at promoting unity, development, and good governance," Odulate appealed.
As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day anniversary, the chairman expressed optimism about the nation's future, encouraging citizens not to lose faith in the country's potential despite prevailing challenges.
