The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS National) has raised serious alarm over a persistent gas leakage reportedly affecting schools, students, and residents in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, calling for immediate intervention from government authorities before the situation escalates into a major disaster.
In a strongly worded press statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the association, Comrade Adeyemi Samson Ajasa, popularly known as Samrich, the student body described the development as a growing public health and environmental emergency capable of endangering lives if urgent measures are not taken.
According to the statement, several students have reportedly been rushed to hospitals during school hours after suffering from the harmful effects believed to be linked to the continuous gas leakage within the community. The association further disclosed that some educational institutions in the area have temporarily suspended academic activities in a bid to protect students, teachers, and non-academic staff from further exposure.
NANS noted that the disturbing incident has created widespread fear and panic among residents, parents, and school authorities, with pictorial and video evidences already circulating on social media showing the severity of the situation and the tension within the affected areas.
The student body therefore called on the Ogun State Government, the Commissioner for Environment, and the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government to urgently intervene and address the environmental hazard before it leads to more severe health complications or possible fatalities.
“We urge all relevant environmental agencies, emergency response authorities, and public health institutions to immediately commence thorough investigations, containment operations, and public safety measures aimed at restoring normalcy and protecting lives,” the statement read.
NANS stressed that the safety and wellbeing of Nigerian students must remain a top priority, insisting that educational environments should be safe, healthy, and conducive for learning without exposure to preventable environmental dangers.
The association also expressed solidarity with affected students, parents, schools, and residents of Ijebu-Ode, while urging all responsible authorities to act swiftly and responsibly in the interest of public safety.
Residents of the community have reportedly continued to express concern over the unexplained leakage and its effects, as calls grow louder for immediate environmental assessment and emergency response from relevant agencies.
