IJEBU-ODE, Ogun State — Fresh anxiety swept through Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday after a mysterious and offensive odour reportedly engulfed Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, leaving several students and staff members requiring urgent medical attention.
The incident, which occurred during school hours, triggered panic among students, teachers and residents as many complained of breathing difficulties, dizziness and severe discomfort shortly after perceiving the strange smell within the school premises.
Eyewitnesses said the unusual odour spread rapidly across parts of the school, causing confusion and prompting emergency interventions by school authorities. Some affected students and staff members were immediately evacuated and taken to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, where they received treatment.
The latest occurrence has intensified concerns among parents and residents, particularly because it is the third reported incident linked to a mysterious substance in recent months.
In April, approximately 30 students of the same school were hospitalised after being exposed to an unidentified substance that reportedly caused similar symptoms. The incident sparked widespread concern and prompted preliminary investigations by health and environmental authorities.
Worries deepened further following another reported episode in recent weeks during which more than 100 students from various schools, including Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, were said to have been affected by exposure to an unknown substance. The development led to emergency responses from health officials and school management while efforts were initiated to determine the source of the contamination.
Wednesday's recurrence has left many parents demanding urgent government intervention. Several parents who rushed to the school upon receiving reports of the incident expressed fears over what they described as a growing environmental and public health threat.
"We are deeply worried. This is happening too often, and nobody seems to know what is causing it," one concerned parent said. "Our children cannot continue learning under these conditions."
Residents also called on environmental protection agencies, public health authorities and emergency management officials to conduct comprehensive investigations into the recurring incidents and implement lasting solutions to safeguard students and staff.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Ogun State Government nor relevant environmental and emergency response agencies had issued an official statement explaining the cause of the latest outbreak.
Authorities have, however, urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
The repeated occurrence of the mysterious odour incidents has heightened concerns about environmental safety around educational institutions in Ijebu-Ode, with stakeholders insisting that swift action is needed to identify the source of the problem and prevent future outbreaks.
For many residents, the unanswered questions surrounding the recurring incidents have become a source of growing apprehension, as they await definitive answers from authorities responsible for protecting public health and safety.
