The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Strategic Command has uncovered a network of caves and underground tunnels used for illicit drug activities in the Rimin Kebe area of Kano State.
The discovery was disclosed in a press release issued on May 6, 2026, by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.
According to the statement, the operation, codenamed “Operation Sharar Mafaka”, was executed on Monday, May 4, 2026, following intelligence-gathering and sustained surveillance in the area.
Operatives reportedly found multiple caves constructed and modified by suspected drug dealers to serve as living quarters and distribution points. Some of the hideouts were furnished with household items, including mats, pillows, food flasks, plates and cutlery, indicating prolonged occupation and organised activity.
The statement added that certain tunnels appeared to be under construction, potentially linking different hideouts underground.
Commander of the Kano Strategic Command, Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, said several of the caves and tunnels have already been dismantled, with plans underway to demolish and secure the remaining structures.
“We will continue to pursue these unscrupulous elements wherever they hide,” Lawal said. “Our commitment is unwavering. Those involved in illicit drug trade should consider exiting now, as we are determined to rid Kano of this menace.”
He noted that the operation aligns with directives from the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), to intensify efforts against drug networks nationwide.
The command also called on residents to support ongoing efforts by reporting suspicious activities to NDLEA offices, stressing that timely information remains critical in tackling substance abuse across the state.
