Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has announced the acquisition of $53 million in military equipment from Russia to enhance the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) capabilities.
The consignment includes advanced machinery for armored vehicle repairs, strengthening the nation’s defense infrastructure.
Speaking at the commissioning of a Military Mechanised Major Repair Facility at Gaddafi Military Barracks in Magamaga and a maintenance workshop at Entebbe Airport, Museveni underscored the importance of these facilities in ensuring the UPDF’s operational readiness.
“This equipment and these facilities mark a significant step in bolstering our defense capacity,” he stated, emphasizing their role in maintaining military hardware.
The development highlights growing military-technical cooperation between Uganda and Russia, building on recent agreements for technology transfers and joint commissions.
The new repair and maintenance infrastructure is expected to enhance the UPDF’s self-reliance, reducing downtime for critical assets like armored vehicles.
This move comes as Uganda seeks to modernize its military amid regional security challenges, with the Russia partnership signaling a strategic alignment to boost defense capabilities through advanced equipment and technical support.
