The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Governors of Benue and Zamfara States, Hyacinth Alia and Dauda Lawal, respectively, alongside their State Houses of Assembly, to appear before it on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
The summons follows a petition filed by a civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, urging the House to take over the constitutional functions of the legislative arms of both states due to worsening insecurity.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Head of Media for the Committee, Chooks Oko, the escalating security challenges in the two states have raised concerns about governance capacity.
The statement noted that the executive and legislative arms of both states are expected to defend their positions and explain why the House should not intervene.
This summon is in response to a petition by Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, asking the House to step in due to the insecurity threatening the constitutional order in Benue and Zamfara States,” Oko said.
The summons was personally signed by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Mike Etaba, who emphasized that all summoned parties are already familiar with the issues at hand.
“Our duty is to ensure that the rule of law prevails. The invited parties now have the opportunity to present their sides and allow Nigerians to understand the situation. Anarchy will not be given any space in our democracy,” Etaba declared.
This development comes amid a series of violent attacks and reports of killings in both states, raising national concern and drawing calls for urgent federal intervention.
