LASDRI OPENS TWO NEW ANNEX OFFICES AT SURA, AGRIC BUS STOP

The General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, has revealed that the Institute has opened two additional training annexe offices in Lagos as part of efforts to further decongest the existing training centres in line with the COVID-19 safety protocols at the Institute.

Mrs. Taimiyu, who disclosed this during her interview on a Yoruba Radio programme “Bosenlo” on Traffic Radio 96.1FM, noted that the two new annexe offices located at Sura Licensing Office, Olowu, on Lagos Island and at Agric Bus Stop, beside Oando Petrol Station in Ikorodu, increased the Institute’s annexe offices to four.

According to her, “With these two new additions, we now have five main centres and four annexe offices across the State. The annexe offices are equipped to train professional drivers on the Mandatory Professional Drivers’ Courses only, while the five main centres offer the Mandatory Training, Structured and Rehabilitation Training Programmes”.

“Professional drivers requiring Rehabilitation Training are usually referred to the centres by law enforcement agents when they contravene any of the State Traffic Laws. They are expected to visit any of the five centres spread across the State based on their own discretion”, she added.

On the impact of the Institute in Lagos State, the General Manager said that LASDRI has continued to improve its efforts towards ensuring that all drivers are well-schooled in the technology of driving by imbibing defensive driving techniques to reduce road crashes and make Lagos road safe for all motorists and pedestrians.

The General Manager averred that “Over the years, LASDRI has been able to re-orientate and educate drivers on traffic-related laws and regulations, bridging the gap between governance and the road users as well as improving the literacy level among drivers and other road users”.

While appealing to all pedestrians to make use of the footbridges provided by the State Government, she pointed out that work is ongoing to reduce the fatality rate on the road to the bearest minimum with the construction of new road infrastructure, increase in manpower in the area of traffic management and the development of intermodal transport system.

She hinted that a new curriculum is being developed for training, just as the audio-visual aids presently in use at the Institute have also been reviewed and upgraded for more comprehensive training of professional drivers, especially on improving their driving abilities and knowledge.

Tiamiyu reiterated that LASDRI is adhering strictly to the COVID-19 protocols issued by the State and Federal Government for the safety of both Drivers and Staff of the Institute to stem the spread of the Coronavirus disease in Lagos.

While appreciating Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his prompt response in solving all the challenges facing the Institute, she appealed to all professional drivers, particularly commercial drivers to present themselves at the Institute for the yearly mandatory training programme when due.
