The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo says Buhari's presence at the ongoing Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) meeting in Saudi Arabia could plung Nigeria into religious crisis as it portrays the country as an Islamic nation.
"This (Nigeria) is a secular country and a leader that wants to be a mullah or fanatic is free to resign rather than plunge us into a religious crisis,” the group said in a statement Friday.
It also lampooned Femi Gbajabiamila, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives for hypocrisy claiming his conversion to Islam which is solely for political gains, is dangerous for Nigeria's democracy.
In the statement by its deputy national publicity secretary, Chucks Ibegbu, Ohanaeze Ndigbo stressed that “Although people have a right to change their religion, the sudden change from a Christian to a Muslim and his umrah journey to Mecca just to be Speaker is a bad omen. Can we trust such a character who can change his faith for power sake?,” it quizzed.
President Buhari had flown to Saudi Arabia shortly after his swearing in last Wednesday to attend the OIC meeting billed to commence Friday.
Garba Shehu, Buhari's Senior Special Assistant, (Media & Publicity), said the summit to be convened under the theme, “Makkah al-Mukarramah Summit: Hand in Hand toward the Future,” seeks to develop a unified stance on events in the Islamic world.
Shehu also said “President Buhari is expected to address the forum and underscore the need for member countries to unite and work together to combat common challenges such as terrorism and violent extremism.
“The President will also push forward themes that have been at the forefront of his domestic and international priorities, including reviving the Lake Chad Basin, investing in Nigeria to create jobs and financing for development
