Suspected armed herders on Monday ambushed the escort of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayilamo in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two police officers.

Community sources told journalists on Tuesday that the DPO had travelled to Makurdi on official duties and was returning to Ayilamo when his convoy was attacked.

Around 6pm on Monday, newly deployed Mobile Police officers heading from Ayilamo to meet and escort the returning DPO were ambushed and killed.

The attack follows a deadly raid on the same Ayilamo community last Thursday, in which suspected armed herders killed four police officers and seven residents.

Benue State Police Command spokesperson DSP Peter Aondongu confirmed the latest incident.

He said the DPO had gone to Makurdi to collect some items and, while returning to Ayilamo, was attacked, resulting in the loss of two of his men.

Residents described the attackers as armed invaders operating from forests and deserted villages in Tombo Council Ward of Logo LGA.

The two latest deaths bring the number of policemen killed in Ayilamo to six within three days.
