Warns political thugs, miscreants to stay away from council ahead of 2027 elections
The Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Amb. Adesina ‘Lanre Ogunsola, FCPA, has convened a strategic Peace and Security Stakeholders Meeting as part of efforts to strengthen security, deepen community collaboration and ensure the safety of lives and property across the council area.
The meeting brought together representatives of various security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations, market leaders, community leaders and other critical stakeholders to deliberate on emerging security challenges and develop practical measures to sustain peace in the local government.
Speaking at the meeting, Ogunsola reaffirmed that the protection of lives and property remains a major priority of his administration, stressing that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of insecurity.
According to him, “The safety of lives and property of our people remains my top priority. Without peace and security, meaningful development cannot thrive. Therefore, we must all work together to ensure that Obafemi Owode Local Government remains peaceful, safe and conducive for everyone.”
The council chairman disclosed that his administration would intensify collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders, including through the formation of a joint patrol team aimed at improving security coverage across communities within the local government.
Representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other security agencies at the meeting briefed stakeholders on the prevailing security situation in the council area.
They also pledged their continued cooperation with the local government in strengthening security and preventing criminal activities.
The stakeholders, while contributing to the discussions, highlighted some security concerns affecting various communities and proposed measures to tackle them.
Among the recommendations were improved intelligence gathering and information sharing, stronger cooperation among security agencies, the establishment of a coordinated joint security arrangement and increased engagement with youths to prevent them from being recruited into criminal activities and other social vices.
Ogunsola welcomed the recommendations and reiterated his administration's readiness to work closely with security agencies, traditional institutions, religious bodies, community leaders, youth groups and other relevant stakeholders in maintaining peace across Obafemi Owode.
He urged residents to support security agencies by providing useful and timely information capable of assisting authorities in preventing crime and responding promptly to security threats.
The chairman also encouraged residents to embrace the principle of “See Something, Say Something,” noting that security could not be achieved by government and security agencies alone.
He stressed that the active participation of residents remained critical to building a peaceful, secure and prosperous Obafemi Owode Local Government.
In a strong warning ahead of the 2027 general elections, Ogunsola cautioned political miscreants, thugs and individuals planning to exploit political campaigns to foment trouble to stay away from the council area.
He declared that his administration would not tolerate activities capable of threatening the peace and security of residents, warning that the government would take every credible security threat seriously.
The chairman's warning comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with stakeholders expected to work together to prevent political violence and other forms of criminality that could undermine the peaceful atmosphere in the council.
The meeting ended with stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to greater cooperation, enhanced intelligence sharing, coordinated security operations and community participation towards ensuring lasting peace, security and sustainable development across Obafemi Owode Local Government.
