The House of Representatives candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency has called on politicians and elected representatives at all levels to ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt directly by the people they represent.
The PDP candidate made the call in a message commemorating the 2026 International Day of Democracy, stressing that democracy should not be limited to political participation, elections and the exercise of political power, but must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
According to the candidate, politicians must begin by extending meaningful development to their immediate communities, noting that elected representatives should remain connected to the people and responsive to their needs.
He urged local government officials, state governors, federal lawmakers and other political office holders to prioritise projects and policies that improve the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“Democracy becomes meaningful when the people can feel its impact in their communities. Political leaders must ensure that the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots through quality education, accessible healthcare, good roads, employment opportunities, security and other essential services,” he said.
He further emphasised the need for greater accountability, transparency and responsible leadership, urging politicians to see public office as an opportunity to serve rather than a means of personal enrichment.
The PDP candidate also called on citizens to remain active participants in the democratic process by holding their elected representatives accountable and demanding good governance.
He congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy 2026, while expressing optimism that stronger democratic institutions, responsible leadership and active citizen participation would contribute to a better Nigeria.
He maintained that the true measure of democracy is not only the conduct of elections, but the extent to which government responds to the aspirations and everyday needs of the people.
