First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has reaffirmed her support for Nigerian cultural attire, urging citizens not to allow younger generations lose touch with the country’s rich fashion heritage.
Speaking at a recent event, the First Lady said she loves Aṣọ Òkè but finds it too heavy to wear regularly because some fabrics are stiff and can bruise her. She praised Akwete fabric for its soft, breathable cotton texture.
“I love Aṣọ Òkè, but it’s too heavy for my head nowadays. Some are so stiff, and they bruise me”.
Remi Tinubu added that if President Bola Tinubu secures a second term in office, she intends to wear bùbá and wrapper more often because of its comfort.
“If God brings my husband in a second term, I’ll be wearing a bùbá and wrapper because it’s very soft, breathable cotton,” she said.
She also noted that wearing African attire has always earned her admiration wherever she goes, including during international engagements.
“There’s nowhere I stand in the world, even the white person is always in awe” she said.
The First Lady further encouraged Nigerians to continue embracing traditional clothing, stressing that “we shouldn’t let our children forget that.”
