DUTSE — The Jigawa State Police Command has launched an investigation into the sudden death of a 60-year-old man who reportedly collapsed and died after checking into a hotel in Dutse, the state capital, with a 20-year-old woman.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has sparked public interest, with police urging residents to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Lawan Shiisu, the deceased and the young woman had checked into the hotel earlier before the man suddenly developed a medical emergency shortly after requesting a meal.
Shiisu said officers attached to the Yalwawa Police Division responded promptly after receiving a distress call from the hotel. The victim was immediately evacuated to the General Hospital, Dutse, where medical personnel examined him and confirmed him dead.
Following the confirmation of his death, detectives secured the hotel room and commenced preliminary investigations. During a search of the scene, police recovered food items, beverages, a suspected sexual enhancement substance, and other personal belongings believed to be relevant to the investigation.
The police spokesman explained that all recovered items had been preserved as exhibits for forensic examination and further investigative procedures.
He added that after medical certification and completion of the necessary documentation, the deceased's body was released to his family for burial in line with their request.
Shiisu also disclosed that the 20-year-old woman, who was with the deceased at the time of the incident, has been cooperating with investigators. According to him, she has provided useful information that may assist police in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the man's death.
The command stressed that there is currently no official conclusion regarding the cause of death, noting that investigations are still ongoing.
"The investigation will be conducted thoroughly, professionally, and impartially to establish all the facts surrounding the incident," Shiisu said.
He appealed to members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or engaging in speculation that could hinder the investigation or create unnecessary panic.
The police assured residents that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress and more facts become available.
The incident has renewed discussions on the importance of medical awareness, especially among older individuals with underlying health conditions, while authorities continue efforts to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death.
