Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Osun State have apprehended the Director of Operations of the Amotekun Corps, Joseph Olagunju, over allegations of illegal possession of police uniforms and prohibited weapons.
The arrest, which was carried out earlier this month, has sent shockwaves through the state's security architecture, raising concerns over the operations of regional security outfits.
According to a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity, Olagunju was taken into custody following intelligence reports that pointed to the unauthorised acquisition and storage of police paraphernalia.
Items recovered during the operation included several police uniforms, axes, cutlasses, and other offensive weapons, which are said to be in violation of existing firearms and uniform regulations.
The Osun State Police Command is yet to release an official statement regarding the development, but security analysts suggest the arrest may have implications for the coordination between the state-owned Amotekun Corps and conventional security agencies.
The Amotekun Corps, established to complement the efforts of the police and other security agencies in tackling insecurity in the South-West region, has often faced scrutiny over its operational protocols and weapons handling procedures.
As of press time, the suspect remains in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the items recovered and whether there was any official authorisation for their possession.
