President Bola Tinubu on Thursday convened a closed-door security meeting with Nigeria's service chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police at the Presidential Villa amid a surge in attacks on military positions and personnel, particularly in the North-East.
The nearly two-hour session, which ended around 5:10 pm, marked IG Tunji Disu's first formal engagement with the President and other top security leaders since assuming office on February 28, 2026.
Details of the discussions were not made public, but the meeting came against the backdrop of heightened insurgency threats from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Recent incidents include intensified assaults on forward operating bases, resulting in the deaths of at least three commanding officers in the past week, as well as attacks and abductions in locations such as Ngoshe, Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok in Borno State.
Service chiefs arrived discreetly without their usual official vehicles and departed quietly after the briefing.
The gathering follows President Tinubu's earlier assurances during an Iftar dinner with security leaders on March 6, where he declared: “Nigeria will defeat terrorism despite these attacks. We will not bow to insurgents.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima has similarly vowed that the administration would end the insurgency through overwhelming force.
This latest high-level engagement underscores the Tinubu administration's renewed focus on coordinating security efforts to counter escalating threats to troops and communities in volatile regions.
