The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to establish a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission aimed at promoting social justice and preventing discrimination against vulnerable groups across the state.
The bill, titled “H.B. No. 023/OG/2025 – A Bill for a Law to Establish the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission to Serve as a Catalyst for Parity, Entrench Social Justice and Prohibit Discrimination Against Vulnerable Groups in All Spheres of Life and for Related Matters,” was approved during plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The passage followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development by its Chairman and Chief Whip, Hon. (Mrs.) Omolola Bakare.
Presenting the committee’s report, Bakare explained that the proposed legislation is designed to promote fairness, equality of opportunity and the protection of vulnerable groups within Ogun State, noting that the establishment of the commission would help institutionalise policies aimed at addressing discrimination and social inequality.
She subsequently moved a motion for the adoption of the committee’s report, which was seconded by Hon. Folawewo Salami and supported by lawmakers through a voice vote during the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide.
Following the adoption of the report, the bill was considered clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole House. Thereafter, the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, moved the motion for its third reading, which was seconded by Hon. Babatunde Tella and unanimously supported by members of the Assembly through a voice vote.
The Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, then read the bill for the third time before the lawmakers.
Speaker Elemide subsequently directed that a clean copy of the bill be transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
Meanwhile, the Assembly also confirmed the appointment of Barrister Adeleke Godwin Solarin as a member of the Ogun State Judicial Service Commission.
The confirmation followed the presentation of the report of the Committee of the Whole House by the Chief Whip.
Thereafter, the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, moved a motion for the adoption of the report and its conversion into a House resolution. The motion was seconded by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Ademola Adeniran and received unanimous support from lawmakers through a voice vote.
Earlier in her presentation, Bakare informed the House that the committee found Solarin qualified and suitable for the position based on his professional credentials, experience and competence.
Following the confirmation, the Speaker directed that the Assembly’s resolution be communicated to Governor Abiodun to facilitate the swearing-in of the nominee.
