In a bold move ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections, Senator Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has publicly urged Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP fold.
The appeal, made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, has sparked fresh discussions about political realignments and the PDP’s strategy to reclaim power in 2027.
Speaking at the NAF Conference Hall in Kado, Abuja, during the Consultative Conference of PDP Founding Fathers and Stakeholders themed “Reclaiming Our Legacy, Renewing Our Collective Vision,” Governor Mohammed emphasized the need for unity within the opposition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He specifically called on Obi, a former PDP member and ex-Governor of Anambra State, to rejoin the party, highlighting his popularity and potential to galvanize support.
“Peter Obi is a valued son of this party, and we know his worth. So please, come back to PDP.
We need your vision, your energy, and your grassroots appeal to rebuild and reposition our party for victory in 2027,” Mohammed said, drawing applause from party faithful.
He argued that Obi’s return would strengthen the PDP’s chances, particularly in the southern states, and promote fairness in the party’s zoning strategy.
The call comes amid speculations about Obi’s political future, with some reports suggesting he might be considering a return to the PDP or continuing with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
The PDP’s push for Obi aligns with broader efforts to consolidate opposition forces.
Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP, echoed Mohammed’s sentiments, stressing that zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the South would ensure electoral success and uphold justice.
“We urge all our leaders to support the strategy of bringing out our presidential candidate for 2027 from the southern states. This will not only ensure victory but promote justice, fairness, and equity,” Gana stated.
