The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to its members, threatening severe sanctions against those openly endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid for the 2027 presidential election.
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC), in a statement released on Friday, described such endorsements as “anti-party activities” that violate the PDP Constitution and pose a significant threat to the party’s stability and electoral prospects.
The statement, signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, expressed concern over what it called “persistent public media outbursts” and declarations of support for Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) by some prominent PDP members.
Notable figures such as Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and members of the PDP’s Osun State caucus, including Governor Ademola Adeleke, have publicly backed Tinubu’s 2027 ambition.
The NWC highlighted that these actions contravene Section 10(6) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), which prohibits members from aligning with other political parties in ways that undermine the PDP.
Citing Section 59(1) of the party’s constitution, the NWC issued a formal reprimand to those involved, cautioning them to cease such activities or face “stiffer sanctions.”
The leadership emphasized the need to protect the party’s unity and electoral fortunes ahead of its National Convention, scheduled for November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“The NWC charges all members to remain loyal, focused, and continue to work assiduously towards the successful conduct of the PDP National Convention,” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP’s warning comes amid growing internal divisions, with some members openly criticizing the party’s leadership and its handling of past electoral losses.
Fayose, in a recent interview with Channels Television, predicted a dismal performance for the PDP in 2027, suggesting the party could finish fourth in the presidential race due to internal mismanagement.
Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke’s endorsement of Tinubu, described as recognition of the president as a “proud son of Osun,” has further fueled tensions within the party.
The party’s leadership has urged members to prioritize unity and focus on rebuilding the PDP’s image as a viable opposition force.
However, with prominent figures like Wike and Fayose openly defying the party line, the road to the 2027 elections appears fraught with challenges for the PDP.
