The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned judgment to July 10 in a ₦500 million fundamental rights suit filed by vulnerable FCT residents, including beggars, petty traders, and scavengers against Minister Nyesom Wike and other federal agencies.
Justice James Omotosho set the date after lawyers for both sides presented arguments.
The residents, represented by lawyer Abba Hikima, allege arbitrary arrests, harassment, and extortion, and are demanding compensation for rights violations.
Respondents include the Inspector-General of Police, DSS, NSCDC, Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Federal Government.
Wike, in a counter affidavit, denied any rights abuses, arguing that the growing presence of homeless people and scavengers poses security and environmental risks. He cited violations of Abuja’s developmental and environmental laws.
The DSS, NSCDC, and AGF also denied involvement or wrongdoing, stating the suit lacks evidence and legal merit.
