Buhari Congratulates Emir Of Gwandu On Supreme Court Victory

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Major-General Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, the Emir of Gwandu, on his Supreme Court victory that ended a two-decade legal tussle over the emirate’s throne.

In a phone call from London, Buhari praised his friend and former military course mate for his resilience and commitment to public service despite the prolonged court battle. “You have always worked for the betterment of your people and the nation,” Buhari said, according to a statement from his spokesman, Garba Shehu.

The legal dispute began in 2005, when the then-Emir, Mustapha Jokolo, a former Aide-de-Camp to Buhari, was deposed by the Kebbi State Government.

Jokolo challenged his removal in court and initially won reinstatement rulings from both the High Court and Court of Appeal.

However, on June 4, 2025, the Supreme Court overturned those decisions, ruling that Jokolo failed to comply with legal procedure by not submitting a formal complaint to the governor before going to court.

This technical error invalidated his case and reaffirmed Emir Iliyasu Bashar as the rightful occupant of the Gwandu throne.

Buhari wished the Emir continued success and urged him to promote peace and prosperity in the emirate.
