Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Desmond Elliot, recently opened up about a terrifying incident during the 2020 EndSARS protests, revealing how he narrowly escaped an arson attack in his Surulere constituency office.
In an interview with Nollywood On Radio, Elliot, who represents Lagos State, described being trapped in his office due to the government-imposed curfew, which prevented him from returning home to his residence in Lekki.
Opting to stay in the office for the night, Elliot found himself in a life-threatening situation.
“I was stuck in Lekki, unable to go home, so I had to return to my office in Surulere,” the 51-year-old lawmaker explained. He went on to describe how, while watching television and preparing to sleep, the peaceful evening quickly turned chaotic.
“I never expected any trouble that night. I was just watching TV, planning to spend the night in my office,” Elliot recalled. “But suddenly, I heard a commotion outside, followed by the sound of my landlady’s daughter screaming at me to leave the area.”
The situation escalated when an assailant threw a Molotov cocktail into his office, setting it ablaze. “I realized things were getting serious when a bottle filled with fuel and fire was thrown into my office, and it caught fire,” he said, visibly shaken by the memory.
Elliot managed to call for help and reached out to his chief of staff, but the fear he experienced that night was unlike anything he had faced before. “I’ve never been so scared in my life. It was a horrible experience,” he confessed.
The former actor’s harrowing encounter highlights the dangerous levels of violence that marred the protests, which were largely focused on demanding an end to police brutality and better governance.
