Lagos Police Clarify Arrest Of Viral Peter Obi Supporter, Alabi Quadri

The Lagos State Police Command has offered a detailed explanation regarding the arrest and detention of Alabi Quadri, the young man who captured national attention during the 2023 presidential election for bravely standing before the convoy of Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi.

In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that Quadri’s arrest was not politically motivated, but stemmed from his alleged involvement in a violent street clash that rocked the Amukoko area of Lagos in January.

According to the police, chaos erupted on January 22, 2025, when rival youth gangs engaged in a brutal confrontation, resulting in widespread violence, destruction of property, and terror among residents.

“A serious breach of public peace occurred when groups of youths clashed violently, causing extensive damage to both public and private properties,” Hundeyin said.

The disturbance reportedly escalated to the point where innocent bystanders were assaulted and robbed.

In the aftermath, police opened an investigation, gathering witness testimonies and victim statements that allegedly linked Quadri and four others to the incident.

“Multiple community members came forward, some of whom identified the suspects involved in the robbery and assault,” Hundeyin added.

The suspects were arraigned in court, and the magistrate ordered their remand at a correctional facility pending the continuation of legal proceedings.

Amid growing speculation and online outrage over Quadri’s arrest, the Command stressed that all actions were taken in accordance with the law and supported by credible evidence.

“We understand the public’s interest in this case,” said Hundeyin, “but we assure citizens that all due processes were followed, and the matter is now before the courts.”

He also urged the public to remain calm and allow the judicial system to take its course, assuring transparency and openness to dialogue with community leaders and stakeholders.
