Born in Kaduna on October 23, 1963, the late Rashidi Yekini played for several clubs locally and internationally.

He began his professional football career spanning two decades at 17 for UNTL Kaduna in 1981 before moving to Portugal.

As a player of Portuguese club, Vitoria de Setubal, he created memorable years and eventually became the Portuguese League top scorer in the 1993/94 season with 21 goals.

His phenomenal scoring record earned him the title of African Footballer of the Year in 1993, the first-ever by any Nigerian and he went on to represent Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup.

The legendary striker departed this world on May 4, 2012, after reportedly battling with mental problem.

But eight years after his death his daughters Rashidat and Omoyemi Yekini have made waves for themselves in life to maintain the good name of their father.

London-born Rashidat, who is also known as Yemisi is the first daughter of Yekini. She was only 17-year-old when her father died.

In 2017, Rashidat graduated with distinction in Cinematography from De Montfort University in Leicester. She was also the second-best overall graduating student from the institution.

Her younger sister, Omoyemi graduated from the University of Ilorin in 2019, having studied English.

Yekini is most famous for his iconic celebration at the 1994 World Cup when he scored Nigeria’s first-ever goal in the Mundial against Bulgaria.

Internationally, Yekini scored 37 goals in 58 appearances - a record no player has broken up till date, hopefully, his daughters keep breaking records in their respective fields.
