The Cristiano Ronaldo move from Real Madrid to Juventus was perhaps the most talked about signing last summer.
Ronaldo was sold to Juventus for a whopping $110 million, the same fee Real Madrid paid for his transfer from Manchester United nine years, four Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles and 451 goals ago.
It was surprising that Real Madrid was letting their winning talisman go shortly after winning their fourth Champions League.
It was no secret that Juventus bought the star man to help them win the Champions League which they last won during the 1984/85 season.
Unfortunately, this was not to be as they crashed out to Ajax (the team they beat to win the 1984/85 UCL) in the Quarter- Final.
Among other reasons, here’s why we believe the Ronaldo/Juventus Relationship is bad business:
· Crashed Out In The Quarter Final Of The UCL
The most obvious reason is the fact that the main goal that was to be achieved with Ronaldo at the wheel was not brought to fruition.
Over the past few years, the Italian giants have grown increasingly desperate to win the Champions League as they look to seal their European dominance.
With Ronaldo expected to lead Juventus to European glory, unfortunately, a far younger Ajax team knocked them out by winning 2-1 in the second leg after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
This led to rumors of a Ronaldo exit which was a lie. However, Juventus are looking to beef up their team with the purchase of new players in anticipation of the coming season.
· Worst Goal Scoring Season Since 2009
Juventus are not the only victim of this relationship as Ronaldo has suffered his fair share.
The forward has been one of the most consistent footballers the sport has ever seen. Since the 2008/09 season, he has scored not less than 30 goals in all competition.
In Juventus, that was not the case as he has only managed 29 goals in all competitions so far this season.
The end of an era?
· Copa Italia Loss After Winning Since 2015
After winning the Italian Cup every year since 2015 Juve was unable to win the Copa Italia title which they have won 13 times.
They were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Atalanta, one of the eventual two finalists, in January 2019. Though Atalanta lost the final to Lazio, they can look back on their journey with some satisfaction having sent out the defending champions.
With only the Serie A title in the bag, by Juventus’ standards, it was no doubt a disappointing season.
· Over-Reliance On Ronaldo
With the accolades attached to Ronaldo, it is no surprise that Juventus players have obviously started to depend on their star forward, but it became a little ‘over’.
More often than not, his goals have been the thin line separating them from losing several games across all competitions.
Even though he experienced a goal drought for four games after putting pen to paper, he went on to score 29 goals and 10 assists.
He is obviously their best player this season.
