The Ogun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over what it described as the systematic removal and destruction of its campaign posters and billboards across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.
The party alleged that its campaign materials erected at various strategic locations across Ogun State were being removed or destroyed, while efforts to secure additional billboard spaces for its campaign activities were allegedly being frustrated.
Speaking during a Yoruba programme on Family FM on Friday, September 4, 2025, where he represented the PDP, former Special Assistant to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, on Agriculture, Olanrewaju Showunmi, who later defected to the PDP, expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as an uneven environment for political parties operating in the state.
Showunmi alleged that owners of several billboards approached by the PDP had repeatedly declined requests by the party to use their advertising spaces for campaign purposes.
According to him, the situation becomes more concerning when billboards where PDP campaign posters have already been displayed are subsequently dismantled or cleared by signage authorities without, according to him, any satisfactory explanation being given to the party.
He said the development had raised questions among party supporters and members about the circumstances surrounding the removal of the opposition party's campaign materials.
Showunmi maintained that political parties should be allowed to operate and campaign within the provisions of the law, stressing that the right to political expression and participation should not be restricted through actions capable of creating an uneven playing field.
He said the PDP would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and authorities through legitimate channels to seek clarification on the removal of its campaign materials and to ensure that its members and supporters are able to participate fully in the political process.
The former aide also appealed to the relevant authorities, particularly those responsible for signage regulation, to provide clear explanations whenever campaign billboards or posters are removed, saying transparency would help prevent unnecessary tension and suspicion among political actors.
He emphasised that the PDP was committed to conducting its political activities peacefully and in accordance with the law, urging its members and supporters to remain calm and avoid any action that could undermine public order.
The allegation comes at a time when political activities are gradually intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and their candidates increasingly seeking visibility across Ogun State.
Showunmi therefore called for what he described as a level playing field for all political parties, insisting that every political organisation should have reasonable access to lawful campaign opportunities without discrimination.
He stressed that the democratic process would be better served when all parties are allowed to present their programmes, candidates and policies to the electorate freely and peacefully.
The PDP representative further urged the people of Ogun State to remain vigilant and assess political parties based on their programmes, competence and commitment to the development of the state rather than on the volume of campaign materials displayed in public spaces.
He said the party would continue to pursue its campaign and political engagements through peaceful and lawful means as it seeks to strengthen its presence across the 20 local government areas of Ogun State.
