The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has strongly criticised the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for naming Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, NNPP National Secretary-General, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, described the decision as “a gross mistake,” warning that Kwankwaso’s political record shows he could betray the party.
Olaposi recalled that the NNPP gave Kwankwaso a free presidential ticket in 2023, which elevated his national profile, only for him to later turn against the party.
“Once a betrayer, always a betrayer, and posterity will prove us right,” he said, adding that Kwankwaso’s actions triggered internal crises and led to mass defections from the NNPP.
The statement also rejected claims that the NNPP was handed over to Kwankwaso by its founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, stressing that the party belongs to its Board of Trustees and was never ceded to him.
Olaposi further argued that Obi’s popularity alone would not secure victory for the NDC in 2027, noting that voters would scrutinise the track record of the vice-presidential candidate.
