The United Kingdom rejected no fewer than 1.34 million visa applications submitted by Nigerians between 2005 and the first quarter of 2026, according to official data released by the UK Home Office.
The figures, obtained from the Home Office's entry clearance visa outcomes dataset, showed that 1,344,595 Nigerian visa applications were refused during the 21-year period, making Nigeria the second-highest nationality worldwide for UK visa refusals after India.
The latest immigration statistics, which cover visa decisions from 2005 through the first quarter of 2026, indicated that Nigerians accounted for 15.2 per cent of the 8.83 million visa refusals recorded globally over the period.
Despite the high number of rejections, the data also underscored the strong demand for travel to the UK among Nigerians. A total of 2,723,558 visas were granted to Nigerian applicants during the same period, placing Nigeria third globally for UK visa approvals, behind only India and China.
The figures further confirmed Nigeria's position as the largest recipient of UK entry clearance visas in Africa, ahead of South Africa and Egypt, reflecting the country's enduring educational, business, tourism and family ties with the United Kingdom.
According to the Home Office dataset, Nigerians submitted approximately 4.09 million visa applications between 2005 and the first quarter of 2026. Of these, 4,068,153 applications had received final decisions by the end of the reporting period.
The statistics suggest that while a significant number of Nigerian applications were refused, the majority of applications that received decisions resulted in visa approvals. This highlights the continued importance of Nigeria as one of the UK's largest visa markets globally, despite the substantial volume of refusals recorded over the years.
The UK Home Office did not, in the dataset, provide a detailed breakdown of the reasons for the refusals. Visa applications may be denied for several reasons, including failure to satisfy eligibility requirements, insufficient supporting documentation, inability to demonstrate financial capacity, concerns over immigration rules compliance, or failure to establish the purpose of travel.
The latest figures come amid sustained demand among Nigerians seeking to travel to the United Kingdom for higher education, employment opportunities, business engagements, tourism and family visits. Nigeria has consistently ranked among the UK's top source countries for international students and visitors, contributing significantly to the volume of visa applications processed annually.
Immigration analysts say the figures reflect both the scale of Nigeria's migration aspirations and the UK's stringent visa assessment process, which requires applicants to meet prescribed immigration and documentary requirements before entry clearance is granted.
Although Nigeria recorded one of the highest numbers of visa refusals globally, the country's position among the top three nationalities receiving UK visas illustrates the strength of bilateral people-to-people ties and the sustained movement of students, professionals, entrepreneurs and families between both countries.
The Home Office data provide one of the most comprehensive snapshots of UK visa outcomes by nationality over the past two decades, covering millions of applications and decisions across all major visa categories.
