.....Association Marks International Day Against Drug Abuse, Urges Youths to Choose Purpose Over Addiction
ABEOKUTA — The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) National has called on students across Ogun State and beyond to reject the growing misconception that drug abuse is a symbol of exposure, social class, confidence, or popularity, emphasizing that true success lies in education, discipline, and purposeful living.
The call was made as the association joined the global community in commemorating the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, themed “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”
NAOSS National, under the leadership of its National President, Aare Oluwafemi Ajayi FM Castro, also applauded the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, for its sustained efforts in combating substance abuse among young people. The association specifically commended the Commander of the NDLEA Ogun State Command and his team for organizing the Drug-Free Awareness Road Walk aimed at promoting a healthier and drug-free society.
Representing the association at the awareness exercise were the National President, Aare Oluwafemi Ajayi FM Castro, and the National Vice President, Comrade Olanose James, who joined stakeholders, government officials, security agencies, civil society groups, and concerned citizens in advocating against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
Speaking during the commemoration, Aare Ajayi warned that substance abuse remains one of the greatest threats to the future of Nigerian youths, noting that many promising lives and careers have been destroyed by addiction.
He stressed that drugs do not make individuals exceptional or successful but instead weaken mental capacity, damage physical health, hinder academic performance, and diminish opportunities for personal growth and national development.
According to him, the culture of glorifying substance abuse among young people must be discouraged at all levels, particularly within schools and student communities where peer pressure often influences negative decisions.
The NAOSS President further encouraged students currently struggling with addiction to seek help and support rather than suffer in silence. He emphasized that recovery begins with acknowledging the problem and taking courageous steps toward rehabilitation and healing.
“Drug abuse is not a flex, nor is it a mark of sophistication. It destroys dreams, compromises destinies, and robs young people of their potential. Every student must understand that a bright future is built on discipline, hard work, sound values, and responsible choices,” he said.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with relevant agencies and stakeholders in promoting awareness campaigns, preventive education, and youth empowerment initiatives aimed at reducing substance abuse among students.
NAOSS noted that the vision of a greater Ogun State and a prosperous Nigeria can only be achieved through a generation of young people equipped with sound minds, strong moral values, and a commitment to positive leadership.
As the world marks another International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the association urged students to embrace healthy lifestyles, prioritize their education, and remain focused on their aspirations.
The group concluded by calling on parents, educators, community leaders, and government institutions to intensify efforts toward creating supportive environments that discourage drug abuse and encourage responsible youth development.
