The passing of Adegboye Onigbinde leaves a void in the world of Nigerian football, a void that may never be filled. As a nation, we often celebrate our heroes, but we also often forget them when they need us most. Onigbinde was one such hero, a man who dedicated his life to the beautiful game and left an indelible mark on Nigerian football.
His story is one of quiet dignity, of unwavering commitment to principle, and of unyielding passion for the sport he loved. As a coach, administrator, and mentor, Onigbinde inspired generations of Nigerian footballers, including the great Vincent Enyeama, whom he discovered and nurtured.
But Onigbinde's legacy extends beyond his achievements on the pitch. He was a man of integrity, a beacon of hope in a world of corruption and self-aggrandizement. His humility and generosity inspired countless young people, who saw in him a true role model.
As a fellow politician and colleague in the Ife axis, I had the privilege of working with Onigbinde on various projects and initiatives. He was a great stabiliser, always seeking to bring people together and find common ground. His incorruptible personality was a breath of fresh air in a world of politics often tainted by self-interest.
I recall many instances where his counsel and guidance helped navigate our party through challenging times. His commitment to principle and his unwavering dedication to the people were qualities that earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
As we mourn his passing, we must also celebrate his life and legacy. We must remember the sacrifices he made, the battles he fought, and the triumphs he achieved. And we must strive to emulate his values, his passion, and his dedication to the beautiful game.
To Onigbinde's family, I offer my condolences. May his memory be a blessing to you, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all...
