The Senate Committee on Finance has recommended that President Bola Tinubu immediately remove Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN), Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), for repeatedly refusing to honour legislative summons and invitations.
The resolution was passed during a tense budget defence session on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in Abuja.
Committee Chairman Senator Sani Musa (Niger East) strongly criticised Magaji for consistently sending junior officers instead of appearing personally and for offering what the panel called unacceptable excuses such as being at the Presidential Villa or traveling abroad.
Musa insisted that this behaviour undermines the National Assembly’s constitutional oversight functions under Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) moved the motion for removal, stating:
“This man is not coming to the Senate; he’s not above the law. We’re not going to take this rubbish again. He has refused on so many occasions to honour our invitation. I move that this man be reported to Mr President and we ask for his immediate removal.”
Kalu also raised concerns about outstanding discrepancies in the reconciliation of the CAC’s internally generated revenue, which he said required the Registrar-General’s direct explanation.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) supported the motion and suggested additional punitive measures: withholding the CAC’s allocation in the 2026 budget until proper accountability is demonstrated, and barring the commission from spending its internally generated revenue without National Assembly approval.
The committee has reportedly issued a warrant of arrest to compel Magaji’s appearance.
After a voice vote, the recommendation for Magaji’s removal was unanimously adopted and will be forwarded to President Tinubu.
This follows multiple earlier failed attempts to secure the Registrar-General’s attendance, with lawmakers describing the situation as a clear pattern of disregard for parliamentary authority.
