The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State to shelve plans to build an Akwa Ibom Estate in Abuja and instead address the housing deficit within the state.
Governor Eno, while addressing the Akwa Ibom community in Abuja on Tuesday, disclosed that his administration was prospecting land in the Federal Capital Territory for the proposed estate. He also referenced plans for Ibom Hotels and Apartments in Abuja and Ibom Towers in Lagos as part of efforts to expand the state’s hospitality portfolio.
Reacting on Wednesday, PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice (PAPA-J) described the move as “deeply disappointing.”
Chairman of the group, Dr. Tom FredFish, said the proposal was ill-timed, given the rising housing shortage and high rent costs in Akwa Ibom.
“Coming at a time when Akwa Ibom is facing serious housing shortages, outrageous rent costs, and increasing hardship among citizens, this move is economically misplaced and socially insensitive,” he said.
FredFish argued that while economic diversification is important, investing public funds in real estate outside the state amid growing housing challenges at home is unacceptable. He noted that many residents in Uyo and other urban areas face skyrocketing rents, overcrowding, and unsafe living conditions.
According to him, investing in large-scale housing projects within Akwa Ibom would reduce the housing deficit, create jobs for local youth, boost construction firms, increase internally generated revenue, and stimulate the local economy.
“Every naira invested in housing within Akwa Ibom will circulate within the state economy and empower citizens,” he said, adding that an Abuja estate would likely benefit political elites rather than ordinary residents.
The group called on Governor Eno to suspend plans for land acquisition in Abuja and instead launch an affordable housing development programme within Akwa Ibom to ease rent burdens and expand home ownership.
“Akwa Ibom people deserve development at home,” the group stated.
