The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), National Body, has intensified its advocacy against drug abuse among young Nigerians, as its national leadership paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Area I Command, Idiroko, Ogun State.
The delegation, led by the National President of NAOSS, Aare Oluwafemi Ajayi, was warmly received by the Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC), Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Olukayode Afeni, in a meeting that underscored the shared responsibility of institutions and civil society in safeguarding youths and strengthening national development.
During the visit, NAOSS National commended the Ogun Area I Command for its consistent efforts in maintaining security and order across border communities. The association praised the Command’s effectiveness in fulfilling the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service, including curbing smuggling, generating revenue for government, and facilitating legitimate trade. As one of Nigeria’s most strategic border commands, the Ogun Area I Command was described as critical to both grassroots stability and national economic growth.
Speaking during the interaction, Deputy Comptroller Afeni raised serious concern over the rising volume of drug seizures recorded by the Command, describing the trend as alarming. He noted that young people have increasingly become the primary targets and consumers in the illicit drug market.
According to him, “When there are no buyers, illegal sellers lose motivation.” He stressed that while Customs and other security agencies remain committed to intercepting and dismantling drug supply networks, addressing demand—especially among youths—remains a crucial missing link. He reaffirmed the Command’s determination to protect border communities and shield young Nigerians from the destructive consequences of narcotics.
In his response, Aare Oluwafemi Ajayi expressed deep concern over the growing menace of drug abuse among students and youths. He described drug addiction as a silent destroyer that robs young people of their future, derails dreams, and weakens the moral and productive fabric of society.
Ajayi urged youths to look beyond temporary pleasure and remain focused on their responsibilities and long-term aspirations. “The strength of any nation is tied directly to the clarity of mind, discipline, and wellbeing of its youths,” he said, emphasizing that a drug-free generation is essential for sustainable national progress.
As part of NAOSS National’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Customs Service, Aare Oluwafemi Ajayi announced plans to organize a large-scale public awareness rally across Ogun State. The rally, he explained, will target students, youths, and the general public with strong messages on the dangers of drug abuse, the need to discourage demand for illegal substances, and the importance of public support for Customs in the fight against smuggling and other illicit activities.
He stated that the objective of the rally is to protect young people, strengthen national institutions, and promote collective responsibility in nation building.
The visit marks a significant step toward a stronger partnership between NAOSS National, the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area I Command, and community stakeholders. Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to public safety, youth empowerment, and the creation of a drug-free, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
