The Sagamu Local Government has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that reportedly involved world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Olasile Odulate, the tragic incident occurred while the victims were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu. The statement said the vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua and others was involved in a collision with a stationary truck, leading to the death of two male foreign nationals who were said to have died on the spot.
The remains of the deceased, the statement added, were deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, while Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were reportedly rescued from the scene and rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Describing the incident as “sad and heartbreaking,” Odulate conveyed the condolences of the Sagamu Local Government to the families of the deceased, noting that the loss of lives in such circumstances is a painful reminder of the dangers on Nigerian roads.
“On behalf of the government and people of Sagamu Local Government, I commiserate with the families of the deceased and pray that God grants them strength and comfort at this difficult time,” the chairman said. He also wished those who sustained injuries in the accident, including Anthony Joshua, a quick and full recovery.
The council boss used the occasion to renew calls for responsible driving, particularly during the festive season when traffic volume is often high. He urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and avoid reckless driving to prevent needless loss of lives.
Odulate further called on relevant security agencies and road safety authorities to intensify surveillance and proactive monitoring of highways within Sagamu and its environs, stressing that many road crashes are avoidable with proper enforcement and vigilance.
The incident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a major corridor that has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years, often linked to speeding, poor visibility, and stationary vehicles without adequate warning signs.
As investigations into the reported crash continue, residents of Sagamu and road users alike have been urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the highways.
