Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has challenged prominent South-East figures, including Peter Obi, Anambra Governor Charles Soludo, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Abia Governor Alex Otti, to join a peaceful march to Aso Rock to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a Tuesday post on his official X account, Sowore urged governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and all Nigerians who support Kanu’s freedom to move beyond rhetoric and join the protest, vowing to lead the effort himself.
“No more empty noise,” Sowore declared, emphasizing a united, legal, and visible push to end Kanu’s “persecution.” He expressed readiness to set aside political differences for the cause.
Meanwhile, Kanu’s ongoing terrorism trial faced a setback last month when Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed his no-case submission.
The court ruled that the prosecution’s evidence, including testimony from five witnesses, established a prima facie case, requiring Kanu to enter his defense.
The trial was adjourned to October 8 for the Nigerian Medical Association’s report on Kanu’s health, which will determine the next hearing date.Sowore’s call intensifies pressure on South-East leaders to act as Kanu’s detention remains a flashpoint in Nigeria’s complex socio-political landscape.
