The Vatican has officially announced that Pope Leo XIV will be formally inaugurated on May 18 with a solemn mass at St. Peter’s Square, following his election as the successor to Pope Francis.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) at the heart of the Vatican.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, made history on Thursday as the first American pontiff, after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling his election following four rounds of voting by the papal conclave.
According to the Holy See, the new pope will retain Pope Francis’ senior Vatican officials for the time being, ensuring continuity in Church governance.
His first general audience with the public is scheduled to take place on May 21.
