Pope Francis passed away following a stroke that resulted in a coma and “irreversible” heart failure, as confirmed by his death certificate released by the Vatican on Monday.
The 88-year-old Catholic leader died early on Monday, nearly a month after being discharged from a five-week hospital stay due to double pneumonia.
The official cause of death has been attributed to a stroke, followed by a coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.
The certification was issued by Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene for Vatican City State, with the Holy See Press Office releasing the report later in the day.
The medical report also detailed Pope Francis’ prior health history, including acute respiratory failure due to multimicrobial bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes.
His death was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography. Dr. Arcangeli stated, “I hereby declare, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, the causes of death as stated above.”
