Ogun State, Nigeria - April 29, 2025 - In a vibrant celebration of movement and artistry, the Ogun State Chapter of the Guild of Nigerian Dancer Practitioners (OGONDP) inaugurated its new executives on the auspicious occasion of International Dance Day 2025. The ceremony took place at the Ogun State Cultural Centre, where dancers, performers, and enthusiasts gathered to honor the day that celebrates dance in all its diverse forms.
International Dance Day, observed annually on April 29th, aims to promote awareness of the importance of dance and its role as a universal art form. Established by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the day coincides with the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a pioneering figure in the establishment of modern ballet. This year’s celebration drew participants from various backgrounds, underlining dance's ability to unite people across cultures and generations.
The inauguration ceremony was characterized by a fusion of traditional and contemporary dance performances, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ogun State. Dancers took to the stage, mesmerizing the audience with their skills and creativity, reinforcing the idea that dance is more than just movement; it is a profound expression of identity, emotion, and community spirit.

The newly sworn executives were Adeyinka Oluwafemi Sunday Chairman, Idowu Bamidele, Vice-chairman, Adeshina Esther, State Secretary, Ogunbiyi Taiwo, Director of Finance,Awoniyi Monsurat, Director for Youth and Children, Abimbola Christopher, Director of Welfare.
The newly appointed executives of OGONDP were sworn in during the heartfelt ceremony, with stakeholders from the Ministry of Tourism in Ogun State present to lend their support. The executives, led by President Adetola Adebayo, are tasked with steering the association’s activities over the next term, focusing on promoting dance education, providing platforms for local dancers, and enhancing cultural appreciation through choreographed performances.
In his inaugural speech, President Adeyinka Oluwafemi Sunday emphasized the significance of the day and the responsibility now placed upon the new leadership. "Today, as we celebrate International Dance Day, we also embark on a journey to elevate dance in Ogun State. Our goal is to foster an environment where dancers can thrive, share their talents, and advocate for the arts as a critical component of our cultural landscape," he stated.
The event also featured remarks from representatives of the Ogun State Ministry of Tourism, who expressed their ongoing commitment to supporting the arts. They highlighted the potential of dance to attract tourism and promote cultural heritage. “Dance is not just entertainment; it’s an essential part of who we are as a people. With the right support, we can showcase our rich traditions and vibrant contemporary expressions to the world,” the representative noted.
International Dance Day serves as a reminder of the power of dance to inspire, bring joy, and foster connection among people. As part of the festivities, local schools and community groups were encouraged to participate in dance workshops and performances, promoting inclusivity and encouraging engagement with the art form.
