Military-Grade Grenade Explosion Kills Scavenger, Injures Three In Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified scavenger lost his life on Thursday after a military-grade grenade detonated at a scrap yard in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State.

The explosion also left three others critically injured.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred when a group of scavengers attempted to dismantle what turned out to be a live grenade.

The device exploded during the process, killing one person instantly and causing severe injuries to others nearby.

Further reports indicate that two more undetonated grenades were found at the scene when security operatives arrived, prompting swift action from the Lagos State Police Explosive and Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit.

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the area has since been secured.

“Yes, the explosion was caused by a military-grade grenade. It happened around 1:30pm. One person died, and three others were taken to the hospital.

The Explosive and Ordinance Department has rendered the area safe, and the scene has been cordoned off. There’s no further risk of explosion, and investigation is ongoing.”

Authorities are working to determine how the explosives ended up in the hands of civilians.

The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the handling and disposal of military-grade weapons in civilian areas
