FG Releases N50 Billion To Settle ASUU, Other Varsity Staff Allowances

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed ₦50 billion to address outstanding earned allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff of federal universities, according to a statement released on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, made the announcement through the Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, in a statement titled “FG Releases N50bn Earned Allowances to Varsity Unions, Tinubu Reaffirms Education Priority.”

“This intervention is not just a financial transaction—it is a reaffirmation of our President’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them,” the Minister stated.

The payment is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector and ensuring a stable academic calendar. It aims to resolve longstanding disputes that have historically led to strikes by university-based unions, including ASUU.

This development comes amid what has been described as one of the longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history, reflecting improved government-union relations.
