A devastating accident on the Benin-Auchi highway in the early hours of Saturday claimed the lives of 12 passengers, who were tragically burnt beyond recognition.
The fatal crash, involving a Toyota Hiace bus and an oncoming truck, occurred around 5 a.m. at Igueoviobo community, near an army checkpoint.
Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident, revealing that the bus had departed from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was en route to Benin when the collision happened.
“The entire occupants of the bus were killed in the crash,” Mathew stated. “Preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have dozed off due to fatigue, leading to the accident.”The impact of the collision ignited a fierce blaze, leaving no chance for rescue efforts. However, the FRSC managed to identify the victims through the vehicle’s manifest and has since reached out to their families.
In a tragic twist, while all passengers perished, the truck driver and his assistant, known as the “Motor Boy,” miraculously escaped unhurt.
Mathew used the opportunity to caution drivers against pushing their limits on long journeys. “Fatigue is a silent killer,” he warned.
“Drivers must take necessary breaks to rest and stay alert to avoid preventable disasters like this.”
