Five persons lost their lives while one other suffered injury in a multiple auto crash which occurred at a section on Iju Bridge along the ever busy Ota-Idiroko Road in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday.
The fatal crash involved a Mack Tanker loaded with diesel, Toyota Camry with number plate FKJ 132 HE, Volkswagen Golf, TVS Tricycle with number plate KSF 822 QL and a Honda motorcycle.
Traffic report from the scene indicated that the brake of the Mack Tanker with number plate KTU 258 XT failed, and the driver lost control of the vehicle, making it to hit other vehicles on its path.
Some of the occupants of some of the vehicles were lucky as their vehicles were not worst hit but the TVS Tricycle and the passengers were the worst hit.
The zonal commander, Sango-Ota of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, Mr Kunle Ajibade had earlier confirmed the accident, and sent some pictures from the scenes.
The accident occurred at about 10.35am.
He said the TRACE had to deploy crane and a flat bed vehicles to remove the vehicles involved from the ditch, with the exception of the tanker still loaded with diesel.
Also confirming the story, the Public Relations Officer, TRACE, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi said a total of 11 occupants (8 males and three females) were involved in the multiple crash but five died(2 males and three females) while one male was injured
He said the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital in Ota, while the injured is receiving treatment in another hospital.
Akinbiyi said the evacuation of all the vehicles involved had been completed except the tanker, “as TRACE awaits NUPENG officials for transloading before total evacuation.”
He said apart from TRACE, operatives from the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were on ground to direct vehicular traffic.
