Our Institution Has Zero Tolerance For Sexual Harassment – Says Rector

Mr Sunusi Gumau, Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, said the institution has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, examination malpractices, certificate forgery and all forms of misconducts from staff or students.

Gumau stated this in Bauchi on Saturday during the 2020/2021 matriculation for the newly-admitted students of the institution.

Infodaily reports that 5,181 students were matriculated for the 2020/2021 academic session of the institution.

He said that the institution would not allow any staff or student tarnish the reputation of academic excellence of the institution.

“Our reputation for academic excellence and character molding, which we have built for ourselves over time will not be allowed to be compromised by the actions or inactions of anybody.

“You must have heard that the governing council and the academic board of the Polytechnic have approved the dismissal of two academic staff for sexual harassment and 30 students for examination misconducts and certificate forgery.

“These go to show you that the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, examination misconduct, certificate forgery and all forms of misdemeanor from staff or students of the institution,” he said.

The Rector also noted that the National Board for Technical Education has approved the accreditation and re-accreditation of 19 programmes as well as approved commencement of nine new National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes in the school.

According to him, the new nine programmes include; National Diploma in Computer Engineering; National Diploma in Fisheries Technology; National Diploma in Crime Management; National Diploma in Cooperative Economics and Management and National Diploma in Taxation.

Others, he said, are, Higher National Diploma, Science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology); Higher National Diploma Forestry Technology; Higher National Diploma Crop Production Technology and Higher National Diploma Library and Information Science.

He appealed to the Federal Government to provide adequate security to all federal tertiary institutions in the country.

“This appeal becomes necessary because, as it were, it has proven to be impossible for federal tertiary institutions to ay for security and cleaning services from their meagre internally generated revenue,” Gumau said.

Hajiya Rakiya Maleka, the registrar, said that the institution considers the students first in everything it does.

Maleka, represented by Deputy Registrar, Academics, Alhaji Hassan Abubakar, urged the students not to run away from any challenge rather, they should seek help.
