Gombe State Commissioner for Environment and Forest Resources, Hussaina Goje on Saturday formally resigned from the cabinet of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of the state.

Hussaina is the daughter of former Governor Danjuma Goje who was allegedly attacked on Friday by political thugs on his way to Gombe metropolis for the wedding fathia of his grand-daughter on arrival at Gombe Airport from Abuja.

In a one paragraph statement, Hussaina said “I wish to inform that my resignation was based on personal reason. With this, I wish to show my appreciation for the opportunity given to me by his Excellency the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, to serve as a member of his executive council”.

Both the state government and Senator Goje have been trading words on the alleged attacked on his convoy supposedly led by Governor Yahaya’ aides which led to the death of five persons. The state Commissioner for information, Julius Ishaya Lepes blames the former Governor for the incident saying it has become his stock in trade.

According to him, the former Governor, in his characteristic manner, decided to mobilize thugs from various LGAs armed to their teeth under the pretext of accompanying him from the airport into the State capital for reasons best known to him. Lepes said the state Government condemned in strongest term, the breach of peace in the state capital, caused by the visit of a former Governor of the state and Senator representing Gombe Central, Sen. Muhammad Danjuma Goje.

However, Senator Goje addressing hundreds of supporters who visited him on Friday evening to show solidarity warned them not to fight anybody. He said, “as a man of peace, I urge all of my supporters to maintain peace in the state and not to fight with anybody adding that “I will not use my hands to destroy what I have built over the years in the state. You all are witnesses to what happened on my way from airport to Gombe town when I was attacked by some aides of the governor including his ADC and Chief Security Officer”.

Lepes however recalled that during the last Eid el-Kabir Sallah celebration, Senator Goje “sponsored some thugs that threw caution into the wind and went on rampage, leading to loss of 2 lives. Also just last week at Deba in Yamaltu Deba LGA the same scenario played out at the instance of the Senator. It is sad that Goje has not left his old ways and is bent on bringing back his brainchild (Kalare) to unleash mayhem and bug the peaceful atmosphere of Gombe State”.

He said Gombe state has been witnessing relative peace and harmony due largely to the determination and avowed commitment of Governor Inuwa Yahaya in that direction and therefore the government would not stand by and watch desperate politicians unleash terror and violence on innocent citizens to the extent of getting people killed. Meanwhile, the APC in Gombe State has requested that Senator Danjuma Goje tenders an apology to the party and residents of the state over the violent clash.

In a reaction on Saturday, the Gombe APC spokesman Moses Kyari cautioned party faithfuls to desist from politics laced with violence. Speaking at a news conference in Gombe, Mr Kyari stated that the party remained very strong and united under the leadership of Governor Inuwa Yahaya. “We support our party leader, Governor Yahaya’s call for politicians to play the game by the rules,’’ he stressed. He said that the party’s Executive Council had a meeting over the violence involving party members and condemned the brigandage which led to loss of lives and destruction of property.
