President Muhammadu Buhari has attributed unhygienic health keeping standards and not too friendly attitude of staff to patients in Nigeria hospitals as reasons Nigerians sought for medical tourism abroad.

The President stated this on Monday in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital at the commissioning of Muhammadu Buhari International Conference Centre and Telemedicine Hall at the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital. Buhari represented by the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire noted that inspite of sophisticated equipments in government hospitals across the country, the disconcerting report of not too friendly attitude of medical workers to patients triggered the distrust that leaves people to seek medical care abroad.

He charged hospital management in the country to pay attention to improving welfare-harmony of their patients.

He stressed that, the construction of the Telemedicine Hall was a clear reflection of the Federal government’s commitment to support, sustain and improve on the past achievements with development projects spread across the country. “I am delighted to join you and officially commission today,  capital projects executed by Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.

Projects, which no doubt add value to the scope and quality of service in the hospital and contribute to thew improving healthcare to the people of Ogun state in particular and Nigeria in general.

“The covid-19 pandemic more than anything else, has brought to the fore for the country the need to reform and strengthen the health system to be more resilient and able to respond to the day-to-day health needs of their citizens. “Today’s event is a clear reflection of the will to strife for better and of the FG’s commitment to support, sustain and improve on the past achievements with developments project in all parts of the country that takes us far to the road of modernization. “

However, this improvement must translate into tangible for our patients through better customer service, patients satisfaction and overall patient experience during the hospital care.

Otherwise, nothing has been gained from this laudable investments if our patients do not see an improvement with all we give them. “With all these investments, should we now rest on our oars, there’s room to improve and do better. “We still get often for disconcerting report of not too friendly attitude of staff to patients, reports of unhygienic health keeping standards, even in the presence of sophisticated equipments and well qualified doctors ,such simple feelings like this, are more frequently responsible for the loss of confidence of end users on our health system than even the lack of equipment. They’re the triggers for distrust that leave people to go for medical tourism we have alot to do in that regard. “I want to believe that the managers of our hospital after the laudable infrastructures developments, will now begin to pay attention not only to improving staff harmony – welfare -harmony “This international Conference Centre and Telemedicine Multi-purpose hall is set to be equipped with modern gadgets to facilitate international meetings which will contribute to improve the knowledge based and skills of caregivers on a continuous basis especially at a time of covid-19.”
