The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Dr. Aremu Gbadebo has described the medical director of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Prof. Musa Olomu as a workaholic and exceptional manager of great repute.
Alake who commended the efforts of the CMD in ensuring there is development in the centre stressed that the 4 years of Prof. Olomu has brought a giant stride to FMCA.
The monarch said this on Monday during the official commissioning of Muhammadu Buhari international conference centre and Telemedicine Hall and other projects at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
He noted, “since he came here 4years ago, he has not left the hospital for once. It has been one project to another.”
President Muhammadu Buhari however identified the hostile attitude of caregivers and report of hygiene of health skipping standard as key factors responsible for the distrusts that make people seek medical attention abroad.
The president explained that the attitude of health workers has made it difficult for the patient to be comfortable at health care facilities despite the availability of sophisticated equipment and well-qualified doctors.
Buhari who was represented by the Minister for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire noted that the attitude of the caregivers is responsible for the loss of confidence by the end-users in the country’s health system.
He however stressed that there is a need to pay attention to improving staff harmony and welfare of the health workers.
He further suggested that there should be retraining of health caregivers so as to have improved professionalism in service delivery.
He added, “There are reports of the not friendly attitude of staff to patients, report of hygiene of health skipping standard that leave something to be desired even in the presence of sophisticated equipment and well-qualified doctors. Such simple feeling like this is more frequently responsible for the loss of confidence of end-users in our health system than even the lack of equipment.
“They are the triggers for the distrusts that will make people go for medical tourism.
“We have a lot of works to do in that regards and I want to believe that the managers of our hospitals after such laudable fantastic infrastructure investment will now begin to pay attention not only to improving staff harmony and welfare but to retraining health care gives for even better professionalism that delivers service in a more conducive and curious atmosphere based on the lessons we learnt from our traditional African hospitality.”
The president however commended former senator Lanre Tejuosho for initiating such a telemedicine project in the Centre.
He described the project will contribute to improving the knowledge base and skills of caregivers.
In his remark, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan said the National Assembly is using the opportunity of COVID-19 to provide additional resources so as to be able to combat any future pandemic.
Lawan who was represented by the chairman, Senate House Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe noted the country is fully prepared for any sickness that may arise in the nearest future.
He added, “as I speak, in all our tertiary owned teaching hospitals, we are building 10 bed ICU centres, 30-bed Isolation centres in addition to whatever they’ve had before. We are giving them a full well equipped and functional monocular lab in every of the 52 Federal medical centres that we have.
“This means that if we have anything similar to Covid-19 in the future, we are better prepared. It is not only for Covid-19 but for every other epidemic like that.
“Any epidemic for that matter; Lassa fever, meningitis, we now have isolation centres, ICU that can manage it which we didn’t have when Covid-19 just started.
“Through the instrumentality of the National assembly provide several other facilities to improve by our capacity, but it is not yet done. We shall continue to do more.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Medical Director of FMC, Abeokuta, Prof. Musa Olomu reiterated the commitment of the Centre to providing quality health care to the people.
Other projects commissioned include Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo Pharmacy building; Four-wing clinic complex, gymnasium complex; Allah Lateef Patients Relatives Inn; Radiology Complex with modern diagnostic equipment and the oxygen plant.
