CAN AN AMERICAN COACH BRING AN AMERICAN TOUCH TO NIGERIA’S QUEST?

The appointment of Randy Waldrum as the new Super Falcon’s coach by the Nigerian Football Federation has been received with mixed reactions by football fans across the country. He will be taking over from Sweden’s Thomas Dannerby who left the role after the 2019 FIFA Women World Cup in France. This appointment would have come as a rude shock to Netbet Sport and betting fans that would have backed the Nigerian Football Federation to go for a much more high profile coach given the pedigree of the women national team. This is not the first time the American has been appointed to the position by the football federation. He was named the Technical Adviser and Head Coach of the team ahead of the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations qualification, a role which he turned down then.

In the same year, he took on the role of Head Coach with Pittsburgh Panthers in United State of America. In 2018, his record stood at 4 wins, 12 losses and 1 draw with the team, he improved on the record the next season with 5 wins, 10 losses and 3 draws. However, he won 2 national championships with the University Of Notre Dame. It has been argued that his experience is limited to college football coaching in the US with only a brief stint with Trinidad and Tobago in 2016. It is unclear if he will be leaving his role as Pittsburgh coach completely or there is a flexible arrangement that for him to function in his new role while still maintaining his old role.

A section of football fans in the country has submitted that judging by the performance of the American women team over the years, their dominance in world football will suggest that there is something they are doing right. The team is the most successful women team in history winning 4 FIFA World Cup and ranked as number one team in the world for a long period, a trend that was only briefly broken by the German women national team. The Americans have been successful in team transition by finding a way to bring up young talents into the established fold and nurturing them to become top performers.

The Nigerian Super Falcons that Waldrum will take charge of have been a major force in football only on the African continent. The Falcons are the most successful team in Africa (male or female) winning the African Women Cup of Nations a record 11 times. They have made the quarter – finals of the FIFA Women World Cup and the Olympics, they are one of the few teams to have qualified for all World Cup finals since 1991.

This formidable record is still short of expectations of many Nigerians who would love to see their team compete with the best teams in the world for the World Cup title and go a step further from the quarter-final stage achieved in 1995.
Now that an American is taking charge of the team, will he bring a little bit of American magic into the team to help the team live up to its full potentials. Will the team enjoy a smooth transition under the new coach as the old guards begin the hand over process to the next generation? Has the Nigerian Football Federation made the right call with this latest appointment? Only time and performance will give football fans the answers to these many questions. It is hoped that there would be no news of early sacking that would send netbet spot and betting enthusiasts scrambling for odds.
