In football, performance is the ultimate measure of worth, and that also is driven by the form in which players find themselves at any given time. When players are signed for millions of dollars, there is a huge expectation from fans, management, pundits, and even those with little or no knowledge of the game that they would perform and live true to their transfer fee tags. Some of these transfers even attract huge bet from anyone confident enough to see the move and succeed in their new clubs. Unfortunately, the modern game does not give room for below the par performance as patience is in short supply amongst managements of football clubs.
It is therefore not surprising to see players who command huge transfer fees being shipped out to another club after just a season. This situations, have often proven to be catastrophic for some clubs who through their impatience lost potential gems that went on to flourish or even come back to bite them in the course of time. On the other hand, many teams have profited from the impatience of others as they ended up getting good bargains for players that eventually contributed to their success stories on the cheap.
Here are 5 players who were driven out of their clubs due to management’s impatience but went on to flourish with their subsequent employers.

Serge Gnabry
The German international is one of the hugely talented players lost to the Arsenal football club according to many football pundits. His last days as a youth player was with the Arsenal football academy between 2011 -2012 before transiting to the senior team where he played between 2012 – 2016, making 10 appearances. He was then loaned to West Bromwich Albion the next season and subsequently sold to Werder Bremen where he made 27 appearances and scored 11 goals. He later joined Bayern Munich in the 2017 season and played on loan at Hoffenheim for that season. He returned to Bayern where he has become a hero-like figure for the club. He won the won the Bundesliga title in his first season and was named the club’s player of the season. In his second season at the club, he help Bayern win a continental treble; the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the UUEFA Champions League scoring 23 goals in the process. Indeed Arsenal are left counting their losses.
Romelu Lukaku
One of the most criticised footballers in the last decade, Lukaku is seen by many as a talent that has performed below his potentials. Fan’s of Chelsea FC and Manchester United FC may see him in this light, but that is not so with the fans of Inter Milan where he currently ply his trade. Lukaku started his senior career with Anderlecht in Belgium scoring 33 goals in 73 appearances (2009 – 2011). He joined Chelsea FC in 2011 and after 10 games without a goal he was sent on loan to West Bromwich Albion for the 2012 – 2013 season where he scored 17 goals. The next season, he was loaned to Everton where he scored 15 goals. Chelsea was not impressed with their new Didier Drogba, and so they opted to sell him to Everton where he went on to make 110 combined appearances and scored 53 goals. In 2017, Manchester United captured his signature and after 2 seasons with the Red Devils with 66 appearances and 28 goals, the Devils decided to sell him to Inter Milan branding him as too fat, too slow, and too lazy. Since joining Inter from the 2019 – 2020 season, Lukaku has gone on to help Antonio Conte’s team to the final of the Europa League where they lost narrowly to Sevilla. He has also been instrumental to their qualification for the Champions League. He was recently named the Europa League player of the season while Manchester United are still in search of a befitting striker.

Victor Osimhen
Osimhen has always carried an aura of the “special one” around him since his introduction at the successful U 17 World Cup campaign in 2015 where he scored 10 goals in 7 appearances. His senior career started on a wrong foot as he signed for Wolfsburg in Germany where he made 12 appearances between 2017 -2019 with no goals. He was loaned out to Charleroi in Belgium where he scored 12 goals in 25 appearances before making a move to Lille in France in the 2019 – 2020 season. He scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for Lille and was named the club’s player of the season as he helped them qualify for the UEFA Champion’s League. His exploits brought a number of suitors that wanted to have him in their fold with SSA Napoli eventually signing him and making him the most expensive African footballer signing in the history of the game. He is one of the few players in history who has occupied the position once occupied by one of the greatest icon in the game, Diego Maradona.

Kelvin De Bruyne
De Bruyne started his senior career with Genk in 2008 when he earned promotion from the youth team to the senior team. He was signed by Chelsea for around seven million pounds in 2012 on a five and half year deal. He was loaned to Werder Bremen for the 2012-2013 season and then returned to Chelsea where he was hastily shipped out on a permanent transfer to Wolfsburg in 2014. His prodigious talent began to flourish in the Bundesliga where he set the record for the most assist in a season with 21 assists and also netted 10 goals. He won the DFB-Pokal with Wolfsburg and was named the Footballer of the Year in Germany that year. He won the Super Cup at the beginning of the next season against Bayern Munich before his success attracted big spending Manchester City that year. De Bruyne Moved back to the EPL with Manchester City in the 2015-2016 season. In the 2017-2018 season, he won the inaugural Premier League Playmaker of the Season award as well as being voted Manchester Cit Player of the Season. The next season, he won the domestic treble with City, the first in the history of the club. He has gone on to become the top performer in the EPL winning the Player of the Year title last season

Phillippe Coutinho
Countinho had his best years so far with Liverpool FC (2013 – 2018) making 152 appearances with 41 goals to his name. Indeed he was one of the darlings of the English Premier League. He started his senior career with Inter Milan in 2008 where he played till 2013 with loan moves to Vasco da Gama and Espanyol in-between before moving to Liverpool. In 2018, he moved to Barcelona in a deal worth over $100 million. But after just one season, he was loaned to Bayer Munich. The highlight of his loan move was that he went on to win a treble with the Bavarian giants and ironically, he was instrumental to the humiliation of Barcelona by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals where he scored 2 goals against his parent club in their 8-2 demolition a result no one would have bet on. That performance has earned him an immediate recall to the first team of Barcelona.
