The Kwara State government has imposed a total lockdown in the 16 local government areas of the state, following the confirmation of two COVID-19 cases in Offa LGA.

This was announced on Thursday afternoon by the State Technical Committee on COVID-19 headed by the Deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi.

According to the committee, the directive which barred all vehicular movement as well as all types of shops and markets would take effect from 6pm on Friday (tomorrow).

It, however, noted that foodstuff sellers and operators of medicine shops are allowed to operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am to 2pm.

A statement by the Deputy Governor read: “The government hereby bans all vehicular movements, including private and commercial vehicles, from 6pm tomorrow, Friday 10 April, 2020.

“The only exceptions are commercial trucks carrying goods and services who would operate with absolute respect for social distancing and other COVID-19 safety protocols. All kinds of shops, bars, pubs, and markets are hereby shut until further notice. Markets where foods and medications are sold will open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, between 10am and 2pm.

“Contractors working on government projects are allowed to proceed to work with no more than 20 workers on site at one time.”

The statement added that the total lockdown was for an initial period of 14 days, but may be reviewed as government monitors the situation.
